Some Brisbane Lions legends have been named in a list of the Top-10 footy sledges.
The list, compiled by the Herald Sun’s Glenn McFarlane, paid homage to “ the classic footy sledges that had us all laughing”.
Tony Lockett, Steve Johnson, Wayne Carey, Chris Judd and Dane Swan all rate a mention – along with some of Brisbane’s best.
Brisbane Lions Deputy Chairman and Director of Football Leigh Matthews and current Senior Coach Justin Leppitsch made the list for a well-known exchange.
“Speaking in a lift on the night that the Brisbane Lions had won its third successive premiership in 2003, Leppa said: ‘What would you be without us, Leigh?’,” wrote McFarlane.
“Matthews’ response was the perfect comeback. He smiled and said: ‘All I’d be is the Player of the Century!’”
Three-time Premiership Captain Michael Voss also featured on McFarlane’s list for a comment to his brother Brett, playing for St Kilda.
He wrote: “My dad (expletive deleted) your mum last night – normally this sort of sledge would be the right way to get your head knocked off, but when it comes from one sibling to another, it’s considered banter.
“The elder Voss gave it to the younger Voss, and it has been said that Joel Selwood once said the same thing to youngest brother Scott one day when he was lining up for goal.”
Finally, McFarlane included Martin Pike’s quip aimed at the Wakelin twins, Shane and Daryl: “They both sleep with the light on and in bunk beds”.
“It was a harsh assessment from Pike after the 2004 Grand Final following some public criticism that Shane had of Alastair Lynch following his punches towards Daryl in the 2004 Grand Final,” wrote McFarlane
