NAB Cup matches might not count for us much as regular season games, but there’s still plenty on the line for the players.
Lions defender Matt Maguire recently told Brisbane’s 96.5FM that the pre-season competition was a critically important tool in terms of a players’ fitness and form.
“You’re obviously not quite as nervous (before NAB Cup games) as there’s not as much riding on it, but there’s still a bit of personal pride on the line and everyone wants to find some good form before the season starts,” Maguire said.
For the Lions’ coaching staff, it’s an opportunity to test their players and get a better understanding of who is most worthy of a position in the Round One side.
Already the likes of Patrick Karnezis and Aaron Cornelius seem to have really stood up during the NAB Cup, after managing just seven and eight games respectively last season.
It also gives the Club a chance to experiment a little with the side to find the right mix in the lead-up to their season-opener against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday 30 March.
The subsequent wins have been an added bonus.
“For us, as a team, it’s just about getting some cohesiveness through the midfield and really working hard together and build a winning culture,” Maguire said.
“It’s been great so far to have three wins. Hopefully we can get another win this weekend and get into the NAB Cup Final.”
