The Lions have never been in a better position to bring in top-end talent as they approach the NAB AFL National Draft.
For only the second time in the Club’s merged history, the Lions will head into the Draft with four of the top 30 selections.
The Lions currently boast Picks 3, 16, 21 and 22, after some strategic trading and being the recipient of a priority pick from the AFL.
The only other time the Club has had four selections inside the top 30 was in 2013 when they recruited James Aish (Pick 7), Darcy Gardiner (22), Daniel McStay (25), and Lewy Taylor (28).
Gardiner, McStay, and Taylor all remain at the Club and look set to be integral parts of the team’s exciting future.
But while the Lions’ hand at the 2013 Draft was strong, this year’s bounty is considered far more valuable.
Using the Draft Value Index (DVI) points system devised by the AFL, the sum of this year’s top 30 picks equals 5,024 points – which is more than 20% greater than the combined total from 2013 (3,922 points).
Last year’s Draft also proved a fruitful one for the Lions, with three picks inside the Top 30 – Josh Schache (2), Eric Hipwood (14), and Ben Keays (24).

Looking ahead, the Lions are already in a favourable position heading into the 2017 Draft, with two first-round selections – its own, and Port Adelaide’s (received as part of Pearce Hanley’s trade to the Gold Coast).
The 2016 NAB AFL Draft, to be hosted in Sydney, will be broadcast LIVE on Fox Footy on Friday 25 November.
Victorian-based Brisbane Lions fans will have an opportunity to attend a special ‘Draft Night’ event in Melbourne where they can watch the Draft unfold with fellow supporters and hear exclusively from Club recruiters as the picks land.
Only limited spots remain for this function, so please book early to avoid potential disappointment.
