With five Finals appearances over six seasons, there’s more than a few AFLW Finals moments in the highlight reel.

Ahead of this weekend’s Qualifying Final, we take a look at our favourite AFLW Finals moments in history.

Belle Dawes on the Siren

The pressure of finals footy can either produce diamonds or dust, and in the case of Belle Dawes it was glittering diamonds in the form of an inspiring goal on the three-quarter time siren in the 2021 Grand Final.

With the Lions looking to assert their lead into the final break, Dawes’ thumping goal was exactly the lift the Lions needed to roar home to their first AFLW Premiership since the competition’s inception.

First Final at the MCG

It’s one of the most prestigious grounds in the AFL, and in Season Six, the MCG finally hosted its first AFLW match.

Playing for a spot in the Grand Final, the Lions and the Dees went head-to-head on the hallowed turf back in April, 2022.

Although the result ultimately saw the end of the Lions’ Season Six Premiership campaign, it was a moment in history that paved the way for many more AFLW games at the ground in coming seasons.

THAT Collingwood Preliminary Final

While there’s been plenty of memorable matches against Collingwood in recent history, the Season 5 Preliminary Final takes the cake.

In a physical contest that went down to the wire, the Lions booked their third NAB AFL Women’s Grand Final appearance after outlasting Collingwood by four points in a thrilling victory.

Trailing by two points heading into the final change, goals to Greta Bodey and Dakota Davidson looked to have all but sealed the win for the Lions.

With the Pies never ones to give up easily, a long bomb goal from Collingwood’s Ash Brazill in the final 30 seconds of the game ensured a heart-stopping finish for Lions fans.

Holding on in front of a parochial home crowd, the Lions just snuck through to book a spot in their 2021 Grand Final.

A Finals Debut Surprise

As if a Qualifying Final against rival Collingwood could be any more exciting, a surprise debut was the cherry on top when the Lions faced the Pies in last season’s home Qualifying Final.

With Indy Tahau a late out due to illness, the door was opened for first-year defender Maggie Harmer to make her AFLW debut in a Gabba final.

When Head Coach Craig Starcevich announced her inclusion in the pre-game team meeting, it was the emotional drive that the Lions needed to overpower the Pies and secure their place in a history-making Preliminary Final against Melbourne.

Courtney Hodder’s Freaky Goal

Over the past three seasons, Lions fans have become accustomed to the sight of Courtney Hodder stunning her opponents inside 50, but there’s one finals goal that will go down in the history books as one for the ages.

After kicking the opening goal in the 2021 Grand Final just minutes into the first, Hodder slotted an incredible goal midway through the second.

With the Lions trailing by six points, Hodder chased the ball deep into the pocket, and despite being under heavy presser from Crow Ailish Considine, the electric forward soccered the ball off the ground while falling sideways to tie up the scores.

The First AFLW Grand Final

When it comes to memorable AFLW Finals moment, the very first AFLW Grand Final will always be up there.

Held at Metricon Stadium in front of 15,610 fans, the Brisbane Lions and the Adelaide Crows went head-to-head in one of the very first instalments in their fierce rivalry.

Despite the Crows walking away with the top prize, 4.5.29 to 4.11.35, the Brisbane Lions stamped their authority as one of the competition’s top teams right from the beginning.

The '21 Premiership

It’s hard to go past the Club’s inaugural AFLW Premiership as the top moment in Brisbane Lions AFLW Finals history.

After being right at the end in 2017, and again in 2018, the Lions finally broke through in 2021 for their first AFLW Premiership.

Captain Emma Zielke led her side to a 38-20 victory over the Adelaide Crows to see the Lions lift the Cup for the first time in the Club’s AFLW history.
