Five-time Best & Fairest winner Garry Wilson will be the Club’s special guest at the upcoming Kevin Murray Club match-day function, joining Lions Legend Kevin Murray in a star-studded line-up.
Both Wilson and Murray’s significant contributions to Fitzroy were probably best recognised at the Team of the Century dinner back in 2001 when they were honoured as the Club’s key leaders.
Wilson - who played 268 games and kicked 451 goals for Fitzroy between 1971-84 - was appointed as Vice-Captain with Murray his skipper.
Despite being relatively small in stature - which earned him the nickname ‘Flea’ - Wilson was one of the finest rovers of his era and became renowned for his limitless courage. His courage was such that after several bad knocks to his head, it became necessary that he wear a headguard.
He was regularly among the leading contenders for the Brownlow Medal each year and finished agonisingly close to securing the AFL’s highest individual honour on more than a few occasions.
But he remains one of the most accomplished players in Club history having won five Club Champion awards (in 1972, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980), led the Club as Captain for four years (1981-84) and represented the ‘Big V’ on 12 occasions.
Wilson and Murray will headline the Round 12 Victorian match-day event which will be held in The Studio at Etihad Stadium.
Also joining the Fitzroy stars will be injured Lions Brent Staker and Callum Bartlett who are joining their team-mates on the trip to Melbourne. Staker and Bartlett - who are both expected to return in the coming months - will be guests in the room.
Lions National Talent Manager Rob Kerr will also speak pre-game to guests about his important role with the Club and discuss the subjects of player rentention and recruitment.
Tickets are available for $140 per head and include: a premium reserved seat; hosted function with MC Craig Huggins; exclusive preview from a Lions Assistant Coach and a pre-game, half-time and post-game beverage package.
