The Brisbane Lions Academy have won the inaugural AFL National Development Under 16 Girls (Division 2) Champions.

The Lions played two matches across the carnival, the first a 108-point win against the GWS Giants Academy and the second an 85-point victory over the Northern Territory.

Bond University played host to the Lions Academy and the GWS Giants Academy in the first game of the championships on Tuesday afternoon.

Nine different goal scorers and some robust defence saw the Lions get their campaign under way in perfect fashion.

Five goals to Stella Scott and three from Zoe Petrides, saw the Lions kick six goals in the first and third quarter.

The Lions’ defence was also outstanding only allowing two goals for the entire match.

Petrides led all-comers with 25 disposals to go with her three majors.

Molly Ferguson also found plenty of footy, amassing 21 touches and hitting the scoreboard with two goals.

With six multiple goal kickers, the Lions attack was humming, and that momentum carried into Friday’s game against the Northern Territory at Heritage Bank Stadium.

Another strong opening quarter set the tone for the Lions as they piled on six goals to zero to open an unassailable lead.

Ferguson was again one of the best on the ground with 24 disposals and three goals, with Lataya De Pauw also kicking three majors.

The Lions attack was again ruthless with seven different goal kickers and three players booting three goals in Ferguson, De Pauw and Stella Scott.

Whilst the Lions were potent in front of goal it was a solid all-round team performance.

Brisbane’s team defence was one show once again only allowing three goals from the Northern Territory forwards.

The Lions scored 126 and 105 points respectively while only allowing a total of 36 points across both games.

Elsewhere, the Lions Academy under 19 Boys took on the Western Jets at the Swinburne Centre on Saturday afternoon.

A tight first quarter saw the Jets take an eight-point lead into the opening break.

Samuel Marshall was a standout for the Lions with 32 disposals and eight clearances.

The Lions inaccuracy cost them in the second quarter kicking two goals, five behinds as that took a three-point advantage into half-time.

Daniel Annable caught the eye with 22 touches and a goal while Nathan Jensen was solid in the ruck winning 18 hitouts to go along with his goal.

The Jets came out firing after half-time kicking six goals to three behinds in a match-defining quarter.

The Lions brought the margin back in the final term but inaccuracy plagued them again booting 2.4 as the Jets ran out 19-point winners.

The Lions will have a bye this weekend and recommence their season on Saturday the 29^th of April at Heritage Bank Stadium against the Sydney Swans Academy.
