Lions.com.au takes an in-depth look at the statistics from Sunday’s win against Melbourne at the Gabba.
Moloney’s Milestone
Brent Moloney produced his best performance for the Lions in his 150th AFL match – and first against former club Melbourne.
Moloney finished with a game-high 36 disposals (16 contested), 11 hard-ball gets, 10 clearances and seven inside 50s to be the dominant player of the match.
He also finished with an equal career-high 25 handballs.
Disposals
Moloney wasn’t the only player to find plenty of the ball against the Demons.
In fact, a total of 11 Lions players had 20 or more disposals, with Moloney (36 disposals), Tom Rockliff (34) and James Polkinghorne (a career-high 30) the most prolific ball-winners.
Polkinghorne’s performance could have been the best of his 85-game career – and it has come at an opportune time with teammate Daniel Rich set to miss the next couple of months with a shoulder injury.
A special mention also to draftee Sam Mayes, who had a career-high 28 disposals against the Demons to take his average to a 22.3 across his first three games of AFL.
Marks
Mayes was able to find plenty of space in his first match at the Gabba with a team-high nine marks. He has now averaged a eight marks across his first three games.
Polkinghorne finished with eight marks, while Rohan Bewick and Joel Patfull had seven each.
Tackles
Tom Rockliff laid a season-high seven tackles, with Zorko adding six.
Jack Redden still leads the way in terms of tackles for the season with 35 – 10 clear of both Moloney and Josh Green who have 25.
Hitouts
The Lions’ ruck combination of Billy Longer and Matthew Leuenberger worked to great effect on Sunday, with the pair taking the points in terms of hitouts 43-39 against their Melbourne counterparts.
Leuenberger was clearly the best big man on the ground, adding 16 disposals and three goals to his 23 hitouts.
Goals
The Lions were able to share the load with 10 goal-kickers, helping the team to it’s highest score for the 2013 season.
Zorko, Leuenberger and Jonathan Brown led the way with three goals each, while Aaron Cornelius chimed in with two. Zorko’s contribution to the scoreboard could have been far greater given he also booted four behinds.
Brown now has nine goals to his name this season, and leads the way for the Lions ahead of Zorko (6), Josh Green (5) and Rohan Bewick (5).
Goal Accuracy
One of the Lions’ main areas for concern after five rounds would be their inaccuracy in front of goal. They have now kicked 56.78 for the season - an accuracy percentage of just 43%.
The only time the team has been on the positive side of the goal ledger this season was in Round 4 against North Melbourne, when they managed just 9.8 (53%).
Dream Team
The Lions’ top five AFL Dream Team scorers were as follows:
125 – Tom Rockliff
120 – Dayne Zorko
112 – James Polkinghorne
111 – Sam Mayes
98 – Matthew Leuenberger
98 – Brent Moloney
