The Brisbane Lions’ pre-season is now officially over after the Club successfully completed a fully competitive training session at Giffin Park, Coorparoo on Thursday night.

The 33 Lions players who participated were separated into two teams - Gold and Maroon - and went head-to-head against each other for around 90 minutes.

The Gold team was made up predominantly of experienced senior players such as Simon Black, Luke Power, Daniel Merrett, Jed Adcock and Ash McGrath while the Maroon team were mostly made up of younger players.

While there was no official scoring, the Gold team seemed to be the eventual victors although the inexperienced Maroons side certainly held their own.

It proved valuable match practice for the likes of Black, Power, Drummond and Daniel Rich who had all played just one pre-season match prior to Thursday’s training run.

The session was embraced with game-like intensity and fortunately the players came away unscathed.

Jonathan Brown, Brendan Fevola, Jack Redden and Amon Buchanan were among the likely Round One senior selections who didn’t play in the match.

Brown was in Melbourne with Senior Coach Michael Voss for the official AFL Season Launch while Fevola, Redden and Buchanan were all being rested after busy pre-seasons.

The Lions will now enjoy a three-day break before returning to the Club on Monday morning to prepare for their season opener against West Coast at the Gabba next Saturday night 27 March.
