Please find below Coach Shane Woewodin’s appraisal on each of the listed Lions who played against the Giants.
Rohan Bewick | Roh came back to us as an inside mid this week before getting him off at three quarter time as an emergency for the senior team. Found plenty of the ball, had 31 til three quarter time and eight clearances, was really good for us offensively. Asked him to play on Josh Kelly during the day which he probably didn’t do all that well. Kelly had a bit of the ball also and kicked some goals, his defensive actions he needs to work on. Overall pretty happy with his output, worked really hard on the spread, which he does really well for us. |
Zac O’Brien | Was tagged by Jake Barrett. Barrett probably had him for the first half. Zac responded in the second half and was able to get on top of his opponent. Continued to work hard throughout the day as an inside mid for us. Still got to work on his first option rather than taking on too many tackles. Ball security was very good on the day. |
Jordon Bourke | Best game this year for Jordon, probably our best player on the day as a key back. A couple of contests he got marked on but overall his ability to play gate keeper at times and come forward to defend and spoil the ball along with front half turnovers was really good. Played with real urgency and intensity, our best player I thought. |
Archie Smith | Back from a knee injury after a five week lay off. I thought he didn’t look out of place, he played some really good footy for us. Didn’t look like his knee affected him, provided a contest and kicked one, could have kicked two goals. Good to see him push forward onto his opponent. Still working on his contested marking around the ground, but something to build on. |
Hugh Beasley | Like Jordon Bourke, very solid for us in defence. His ability to come forward also as a defender, played the majority as a gate keeper on the day and played really well – certainly improving and getting noticed by the senior coaches as a key defender along with Jordon as our two best defenders on the day. |
Josh Watts | Probably made a couple of skill errors early, particularly with his kicking. As the game wore on he responded really well and was able to give us some drive out of the back half. Played on numerous opponents during the day and was solid in defence. |
Liam Dawson | Probably one of his best games for the year, kicked four, and had a bit of an impact as a forward for us. I thought his work rate improved as the game wore on, playing as a high forward, played him a bit deeper at times. It was good to see Liam respond from the previous week, certainly his illness a couple of weeks ago affected him but he’s been working really hard on his goal kicking at training and it’s good to see him get some rewards from it. |
Matt Hammelmann | Kicked two goals again hitting the scoreboard for us, probably was more last line for us as a key forward. Got a couple of chances, still working on his defensive side of his game and his ability to make tackles and his ground level which he’s been working on will be a key focus for his training this week. It was good to see him hit the scoreboard again. |
Josh Clayton | Went back and played forward for us this week rather than playing on a wing. We just needed some listed players topping up our forward line due to the amount of injuries we’ve got at the moment. He played as a high forward and a bit wing late in the game. Still continuing to find his feet playing different roles as a forward, working on his contested game, GPS data showed he is going really well, we’ve been really impressed with what he’s been producing in that. |
Billy Evans | Played as an inside mid, not a good game for Billy. Didn’t have an impact on the game offensively at all with ball in hands. His ball security was very good though around the contest. So if we can turn them into possessions it will be a good day for him. Still working to play at the level, played on good players with the 18 year olds at GWS as midfielders. Hopefully took something away from the game. |
Josh McGuinness | Josh played on the wing this week, not a big impact on the game, probably missed a couple of kicks early, keeping it simple, but was certainly OK for us on the day. Learning to play another role now for us as well on the wing/back. He’ll keep building on his game. |
Ryan Harwood | Harzy was solid for us in defence, it’s good to see him getting back into some good form. Was great in the contest for us, both aerially and at ground level. Put him as an inside mid in the last quarter when Roh Bewick went off and certainly had an impact for us around the ball. Might try to do a little bit more of that as we go forward so Ryan can pick up his match fitness for senior selection. |
