There will be no complacency in the Brisbane Lions’ camp when it comes to Saturday afternoon’s season opener against the Western Bulldogs.
Despite being listed as warm favourites on the back of an undefeated NAB Cup campaign, the Lions understand that it will count for nothing come game day.
Managing expectation hasn’t been that difficult for a Club that has been starved for success in recent years.
Senior Coach Michael Voss said recently that the Lions had “no reason for false confidence” given they finished 13th last season and have participated in the Finals only once in the past eight years.
Speaking at the Lions’ Junior Partner launch at McDonald’s on Tuesday, Dayne Zorko said his team would need to be at their best if they’re to overcome the Bulldogs.
“If we go out there and let them dictate the play, then of course we’re going to get done,” Zorko said.
“It’s important to keep our pre-season rolling, even though it’s finished, and carry that form into Round 1 and really get our season off to a good start.”
In the Lions’ favour is the fact that 80% of teams that have won the NAB Cup over the past decade have gone on to claim the four points in Round One.
