At just 24, and with less than 60 AFL games under his belt, Jack Frost finds himself in the remarkable position of being one of the Brisbane Lions' most experienced defenders.
Frost joined the Lions at the end of the 2016 trade period after spending four seasons on Collingwood's list. He has been slowly building his workload following post-season hip surgery and this week has resumed full training.
“The hip is feeling really good, the body is feeling really good. I started full training this week. There is kind of a transition period between rehab and full training and this is that week for me,” Frost told LionsTV.
“I’ll be doing three quarters of the match practice on Friday but everything else is full training. I’m getting there slowly, the light is at the end of the tunnel now.”
The 195cm defender will slot straight into the Lions’ backline, which was depleted last year after the retirements of Daniel Merrett and Justin Clarke. Frost isn't daunted by the prospect, however, and looks forward to being able to assist with the development of the Club's younger defenders, including fellow key’s Darcy Gardiner and Harris Andrews.
“Everyone in the backline is really willing to learn, very eager to learn and they listen and that’s a massive compliment to all them.
“I’ve only played 50-odd games but when you are one of the more experienced (players) there is nothing worse than when you’re trying to help out and share that experience and blokes don’t want to listen or take things on board, but it has been the complete opposite to that, and I think it’s made it really easy for me to transition and fit in.
“They’re all going really well and hopefully we’ll stop a few more goals this year than last year.”
Speaking with LionsTV, Frost also praised new Senior Coach Chris Fagan, and spoke about how he is adjusting to life in Brisbane:
“Fages has been unreal. With the list we’ve got he’s really pushed and encourage blokes to try new things.
“Pre-season is where you’re going to make mistakes, but it’s where you can learn from it.
“He’s really encouraged blokes to try and let their talent shine. Some might be good at kicking, some at running, he’s just pushing us to use our strengths as much as we can. I’m looking forward to working with him throughout the season.”
