MICHAEL Voss will wield the selection axe this week after describing Sunday's 98-point loss against West Coast as unacceptable.

Although refraining from giving his players a post-match spray, the Brisbane Lions coach said the performance was below the minimum standard he expected.

Changes will be made for Saturday night's match against Richmond at the Gabba.

Daniel Rich will return from a two-match suspension, while Josh Drummond is also expected to play after missing last week, while full-back Matt Maguire is walking a tightrope after injuring his ankle against the Eagles.

But Voss hinted at more changes being made based on form - or lack of.

"Probably; otherwise, we're tolerating mediocrity," Voss said at the Gabba on Tuesday morning.

"That's not how we demonstrate we're improving as a football club. There'll be personnel changes.

"There's been growth in our team and individuals and guys playing well in reserves, but there's an expectation no matter what your age profile is, that you need to be able to deliver something when it comes to performance.

"The result on the weekend is unacceptable. It's really disappointing."

Voss said he was intent on the Lions finishing strongly over the final five rounds after making what he called significant ground over the season.

They have won just 11 matches across 2010 and 2011 and have already won seven this year.

The Lions coach said he would not 'gift' games and expected players to demand selection with their performance.

The club's reserves team is dominating the NEAFL, leading by a game plus percentage, which ensures many players are putting their hands up for selection.

"You might get a game, but there's a difference counting your games and making your games count," he said.

"We're making sure when we go out there, there's a level of expectation and a culture among this footy team and character we want to demonstrate.

"We have to make sure our next five weeks are representative of the way we've approached the year as a footy team and footy club."

This week's opponent has an identical 7-10 record, and Voss said it was reflective of where the clubs were placed.

"I think they're in a fairly similar boat to us.

"They're a footy team that want to show they've grown. They've got some genuine improvement in that group although their wins at this stage aren't as reflective as the close nature of their games.

"I listened to Damien Hardwick's comments after the game and he was clearly shattered as were his players, but there was a firm message there that they wanted to play out the season.

"We've got both teams that find themselves in the same situation, so I think it'll make for a really big game."
