Jarryd Lyons’ arrival at the Brisbane Lions might have been unusual, but one thing for certain was his first year at his new Club was sensational.
Lyons was delisted by the Gold Coast SUNS in 2018 and quickly snapped up by the Lions the following day. He was reunited with his younger brother Corey, who had already been at the Lions for two years.
At his third club, after stints at both the Adelaide Crows and SUNS, Lyons was quick to fit in with the group and was named in the team’s Round 1 match against West Coast Eagles.
Lyons played all possible 24 AFL games for the Lions this year, including the Club’s two AFL Finals Series matches. He averaged a career-high 23.8 disposals and six tackles per game and polled 13 votes at the Brownlow Medal count, the third highest of any Lion.
The 27-year-old enjoyed a purple patch of form in the Lions’ Round 17 and Round 18 wins over Port Adelaide and North Melbourne.
In Round 17’s 48-point win over the Power in Adelaide Lyons had 36 possessions. The following week against the Kangaroos he had 32 possessions (23 contested), 13 clearances and two goals.
When speaking to lions.com.au Lyons admitted 2019 was one of his more consistent seasons to date.
“It was pretty easy to slot straight in,” he said.
“It probably surprised me how well I went early on.
“But I’m really happy with how the year went but obviously disappointed to bow out the way we did.”
“We’ve just got to keep getting better and come back next year with a point to prove.”
