Selwood is playing his first match since round 12 against Hawthorn when he was suspended for striking Brent Guerra, and Lions vice captain Jed Adcock said they would be keeping a close eye on him this weekend.
Adcock said Selwood's return would make a "huge" difference to a Cats team that has slipped from the top of the ladder with successive losses against Essendon and West Coast.
Although he said the Lions had not spoken about it, Adcock believed the two-time All Australian and reigning club champion would be the most likely man to tag.
"He's one of the premier midfielders in the comp, so with him coming back it'll be a huge task for our midfield," Adcock said.
"I would think out of the Geelong players that even though it's a classy midfield, he's probably the one that can influence the game both ways, attacking and defensively, so if you're going to send one (tagger) you'd probably send one to him.
"You've also got Stevie Johnson, (Joel) Corey, and (James) Kelly has been playing well this year. They've got a lot of guys and you can't go to them all, but I would think if you're going to go to one it'd be him.
"Selwood adds a fair bit of grunt and class to their midfield but it will still come down to us and how we play."
Adcock said the Lions had done plenty of homework on Geelong earlier in the week, particularly on how Essendon and West Coast were able to defeat them.
The Cats came directly to the Gold Coast from Perth for the week to prepare and Adcock said it would have given them a good chance to bond and dissect the losses.
"I think any team that goes through a season with (just) two losses will bounce back pretty strongly," he said.
"I think a couple of teams have opened the eyes of the other teams of what you can do to beat them and what does work and what doesn't work. If we can put our emphasis on that then maybe we're a good shot.
"We've mainly focussed on those two (the Essendon and West Coast matches). We've made sure every player has watched the last couple of games they've played and what works and what doesn't work.
The Lions are expected to get versatile big man Mitch Clark back for the match after he sat on the sidelines for three weeks with an ankle injury.
Adcock said Brent Staker was also a chance following a strong second game in reserves last weekend after recovering from LARS surgery on the knee he injured in round one against Fremantle.
