LAST TIME THEY MET

The Lions entered their Round 17 clash as underdogs against the 2nd-placed Geelong, who had spent the week training up on the Gold Coast prior to the match.

The Lions led at the first change with a determined midfield performance and carried this lead into the main break courtesy of sharp shooting from forwards Mitch Clark and Patrick Karnezis, while Geelong’s James Podsiadly kicked five in the first half.

Geelong were lacking in intensity for much of the first three terms and were evenly matched by the Lions, until a third-quarter pack collision saw skipper Jonathan Brown stretchered off with his second bout of multiple facial fractures for the season.

The Cats gained momentum but still trailed at three quarter time, before dominating the Lions who were now without key forwards Brown and Clark (who was also injured in the collision). Podsiadly took his total of goals to eight and led the Cats to a 29-point victory.

Pearce Hanley (30 disposals, 11 marks) and Matthew Leuenberger (35 hitouts, 17 disposals) were best for the Lions, while Podsiadly (eight goals) and Jimmy Bartel (32 disposals) starred for Geelong.

Brownlow Medal Votes: 3 - J. Podsiadly (Geel), 2 - J. Bartel (Geel), 1 - J. Selwood (Geel)
