A year after being drafted to the Brisbane Lions with Pick No. 21 at the 2018 NAB AFL Draft, Ely Smith has extended his contract with the Club, remaining in the Den until at least the end of 2022.
The 19-year-old big-bodied midfielder played consistent football for the Club’s undefeated NEAFL side in 2019 and this season will be pushing his case to make his senior debut.
“It’s a great feeling knowing that I’ll be part of this Club for another few years,” he said.
“It’s been a learning curve; knowing how to prepare correctly and the craft work required, but I’ve really enjoyed my time so far.”
General Manager of Football David Noble said Smith has grown as a footballer during his first year at the Club.
“We are rapt that Ely has extended his contract with us,” Noble said.
“We have watched a young man learn and grow, not only about the game and being a professional athlete, but as an individual where his contribution to our culture and environment has been excellent.
“Ely showed some strong growth in his game in the second half of the year and has returned in terrific condition to attack the pre-season, fine tune his craft in the midfield over the summer and really apply pressure to that midfield group.”
