Hawthorn will play the Lions at the Gabba for the first time since Round 5, 2008.

SIR DOUG NICHOLLS ROUND

The AFL and the Brisbane Lions will recognise Fitzroy’s Sir Doug Nicholls’ contribution to the game with the league’s yearly Indigenous Round named in his honour.

Nicholls played an important role in shaping not only the Fitzroy Football Club but also the entire VFL competition and Australian sport more broadly.

He played 54 games with Fitzroy and was a brilliant all-round athlete who later became the Governor of South Australia after a life devoted to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Long Walk

The 2016 Brisbane Long Walk will see 300 people meet at Musgrave Park from 8am in preparation for the walk to the Gabba. The Long Walk provides a much-needed public vehicle allowing Australians (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) to express their commitment to reconciliation and a united Australia.

Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Ceremony

Our Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Ceremony will involve a Welcome to Country by Nunukul Yuggera and a Traditional Indigenous Dance. At three-quarter time students from Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts and Australia Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) will perform an Indigenous fusion piece which will consist of Hip Hop and Cultural dance.
 
Our 2016 Brisbane Lions Indigenous jumper artist, Emma MacNeill (partner of Mitch Robinson), will be interviewed on field followed by a making of the Guernsey documentary.
