The Brisbane Lions have signed their first women’s player ahead of the 2017 AFL National Women’s League Season, securing 19-year-old Tayla Harris in an historic milestone for the Club.
Harris – one of the most exciting players in the women’s game – represented the Brisbane Lions in their win over the Gold Coast SUNS in April.
The Queenslander is currently listed with Zillmere in the QWAFL and has played three AFL Women’s Exhibition Games for the Melbourne Football Club, debuting in 2014 when she was 17.
As well as being the Club’s marquee player, Harris will also take on a full time role at the Lions, driving female participation in her role as the Communications and Community Coordinator.
“We’re delighted to have signed Tayla," said Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann.
“Tayla is one of the most talented, young female prospects in the country, her signing is critical to the development of Women’s AFL in Queensland.”
There are eight licences available for the inaugural season of the AFL National Women’s League and 13 clubs vying for the opportunity to be a foundation club in the competition.
The likely make up of the competition will see licences spread among the participating states with four expected to be awarded to Victorian clubs and one each for South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia.
Harris will appear on Fox Footy’s AFL360 next week ahead of the Brisbane Lions Women’s Curtain Opener against Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday.
