Despite stepping out of the Brisbane Lions’ official 2013 Leadership Group, Daniel Merrett will continue to play a critical role in leading the way for the Club’s developing younger players.
Merrett, who was a member of the Lions’ five-man Leadership Group in 2012, will join veteran teammate Simon Black in the newly-formed ‘Mentors Group’.
“I’ve obviously stepped out of the Leadership Group, but that obviously won’t change the way I go about it on the field and off the field,” Merrett said.
“I’m moving into more of a mentoring role that Blacky is heading up and running.”
“We’re really going to crank it up this year. It includes guys like Matt Maguire, Ash McGrath, Brent Staker and Andrew Raines.”
“Brent Moloney, who has come across from Melbourne, has also stepped into a mentoring role. It is great to see a guy coming from another club really want to put his time into this group.”
Merrett’s passion and loyalty towards the Club has never been questioned, and it was highlighted once again on Friday when he decided to re-sign for a further three years.
It means that the big Queenslander will effectively remain a Lion for life.
“It was an easy decision. I’ve got a real passion for the jumper and passion for Queensland,” Merrett said.
“It means a lot to have my name on my locker when I come in every day.”
“It also shows the faith I’ve got in the Club and the direction we’re headed. I’m on board.”
