The Brisbane Lions held a trial day for their women’s team at the Yeronga Football Club on Sunday, ahead of the AFL Women’s Draft on October 12.
Some of the best female footballers in Australia gathered today to show the Brisbane Lions recruitment team why they should be drafted. Those who nominated for the Queensland Draft pool were invited to today’s trial day.
There were around 100 players in attendance, with some players coming from as far as Western Australia to show their skills. This day presented players with a final chance to impress the Lions, while it also gave the Lions recruitment team an opportunity to line players up against each other.

The players were first put through a four station skills session, before lining up against each other in a series of trial games and then finished with a 1500m time trial.
Speaking to the players after the trial, Coach Craig Starcevich said
“The competition for a spot in our group is obviously really fierce."
"We’ve been overwhelmed by how many people have not only registered for Queensland but showed up today."
Starcevich was also very thankful to all of those who travelled from afar to be there at the trial. There were close to 20 players who had come from the likes of Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and North Queensland.
The Brisbane Lions have already announced four listed players (out of the potential 25) and have selected two Rookies. They will pick their next 18 players at the October 12 Draft, then will have until the end of October to formally commit to the selection of three free agents.
If a player is not selected in the draft, there will be an opportunity to still be part of the Club through being named a train-on group player. In addition to the playing list, the Lions will have a group of at least 10 locally based players who will train with the group across the Summer.
