Reserves Coach Leigh Harding has urged all Brisbane-based Lions fans to flock to Yeronga this Sunday to help support the team in their quest for back-to-back NEAFL premierships.
Harding expects a big crowd for the NEAFL Northern Conference Grand Final, but hopes that the sea of maroon, blue, and gold can drown Aspley’s brown and gold army.
“The Preliminary Final was played at Yeronga, and there were a couple of thousand there,” Harding told lions.com.au.
“So we need as many Lions fans as possible to get out there and help cheer on our boys. Aspley had bus-loads of fans come down last week to watch their match against Southport.”
The support from the crowd will be critical, as neither side can boast an advantage by playing at a neutral venue such as Yeronga.
“We’ve only played at Yeronga twice this season, and I reckon Aspley are about the same,” Harding said.
“Yeronga is quite small end-to-end, but is a wider ground so will suit the runners. Aspley’s home ground is a fair bit longer.
“It means that you can score quickly when you go forward.”
Harding didn’t underestimate the value of playing in a Grand Final for his young and developing team.
“It’s definitely going to be a great learning for those blokes against a good physical team like Aspley,” Harding said.
“It’s not going to be an AFL-standard game, but it will be the closest step a lot of these young blokes will have experienced.”
