It was a gallant effort by the Brisbane Lions as they went down to the Aspley Hornets by 34 points.

After a 38-point lost last week to UWS Giants at home, the Brisbane Lions faced the second placed Aspley Hornets.

It was a windy and overcast afternoon out at Aspley Hornets home ground in Carseldine.

The Lions hadn’t won a match since round two against Redland Saints while Aspley had only one loss all season.

The Brisbane Lions had 12 academy players in their squad today so it was going to be a tough match for the Lions.

It started slow for both teams in the first quarter with no team being able to score in the first 10mins of the game.

There were positive signs from the Brisbane Lions team as the defence kept cool under the constant pressure of Aspley’s forward’s goal area.

Aspley continued pressure was rewarded as Henry Leong opened the scoring while the Lions struggled to kick against the wind finishing with two behinds for the quarter.

The second quarter saw Aspley continue their strong performance to finish 27-points in front at half time, while the team finished with 52 marks and 179 disposals.

The Lions scored their first goal of the match courtesy of Eric Hipwood and the Lions finished at halftime with 23 marks and 129 disposals.                                    

The third quarter was dominated by the Hornets as the Lions fought to try and keep themselves in the game.

The Lions were determined to finish the game strong and kicked four goals in-a-row to bring it back within 19 points but the Hornets were too strong for the Lions scoring another two goals.

Eddie Sansbury was best on field for the Aspley Hornets finishing with 21 disposals and scoring three goals and kicking three behinds.

Eric Hipwood was the leader of the pack this afternoon for the Brisbane Lions, the forward finished with 13 disposals and three goals.

Brisbane Lions coach Shane Woewodin said “their effort today was really rewarding but there are some things we need to continue to work on”

“Having the ability to fight that game out and put a bit of pressure back on Aspley in the last quarter was really good”

“It was good to see some younger players getting some consistency and building on really good strong habits”

Next week the Brisbane Lions will be looking to break their losing streak against the Sydney Swans in Newcastle.
