In 1983 Bernie ‘Superboot’ Quinlan became the first player in Fitzroy’s history to kick 100 goals in a season.

Quinlan’s goal ensured the Lions victory over the Pies in Round 21 of the VFL competition, but also guaranteed them second place on the ladder.

Quinlan’s iconic long drop punt sent the ball soaring through the posts, and crowd swarming onto the field.

Commentators were worried that the crowds would swamp Quinlan, but he recovered and went on to kick a total of 106 goals in the season, making him the Coleman Award recipient for 1983.

Quinlan remains one of the Club’s most revered kickers to date.
