On the AFL’s “Wash-Up” Garry Lyon and Damian Barrett looked back at our season.

Here’s what they had to say:

Highlights

Our Round 7 win over Port Adelaide was Lyon’s favourite and he referred to Coach Justin Leppitsch describing it as “his best ever as a coach”.

“At that time Port Adelaide was still considered a genuine contender. A sizeable win and we all thought this was the one that would get them going but it never did.”

Damian Barrett, saw promise in young forward Dan McStay showed there’s a future for him especially when “in a year where not much went right, he played really well.”

Lowlights

Garry Lyon was unhappy with how the “James Aish situation” was handled.

“It didn’t look like he was getting a massive amount of support and maybe the Club could have said it’s a difficult situation,” said Lyon.

Special Mentions

Lyon gave special mention to Mitch Robinson’s performance when he came up against his old side, Carlton in Round 20.

“He absolutely smashed them almost single-handedly, belted them after quarter time and was the best on the ground."

For Barrett, ruckman Stefan Martin had an outstanding season and “at one stage was contending and in discussion for the All-Australian ruckman.”

Chopping Block

The Lions’ match day addition Brion the Lion didn’t go down well with Lyon who wants to see it go because it’s “not producing intimidation for oppositions clubs."

Needs

Lyon highlights the Lions’ need for a key forward and some key backs.

“Freeman and McStay are coming along okay but they just need some key position defenders.”

And Barrett noted Craig Lambert’s appointment to the Club as Strategy and Retention Manager as positive after Lamberts key role in addressing those issues at GWS.

2016 Prediction

To close, Barrett doesn’t see a lot happening for the Lions in 2016 whereas Lyon has some faith in the midfield group, which he thinks will push them up marginally.
