There’s no doubt that the ongoing development of promising young ruckman Billy Longer is in safe hands considering he has two experienced AFL workhorses in Jamie Charman and Ben Hudson among his Lions stable.

Charman, the Lions’ Ruck Coach, and team-mate Hudson both made names for themselves as powerful competitors who weren’t afraid to assert their physicality on the contest.

Longer told Lions fans during a live chat on Thursday that he has enjoyed adding some aggression to his game.

“A ruckman has to be aggressive, I wasn't when I was younger but it's something I had to learn,” Longer said.

“I've been doing a lot of contested work (marking & ruckwork) with Charmo. It’s always fun pushing around the old big dog.”

“He has too much excitement for himself, so I gladly cop the majority of it. But Charmo is a beaut. Every day is Footy Fix for Charmo.”

Longer has also enjoyed learning from Hudson, who will line up for his 150th AFL match this Sunday against Hawthorn.

“Huddo's been a great mentor for me,” Longer said.

“We trade our fair share of competitive bumps and bruises throughout trainings, which we learn to love. Trying to work around his physical strength has been a great experience.”

Together with Matthew Leuenberger, Billy Longer presents a long and exciting future for the Club’s ruck division.
