Brisbane Lions Assistant Coach Jed Adcock says his side can take some major positives from its 40-point loss to Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

The Lions were far more competitive than in their previous visits to Adelaide Oval and the effort was a seven-goal improvement on their 83-point loss to Port at the Gabba in Round 6.

“Although we still lost the game, I think we saw we had the ability to stay in the game for longer and probably up until the last 10 minutes we were still within a chance to win the game,” said Adcock.

“Hopefully what we’ve seen is development over the past six weeks, especially the last couple of weeks we’ve been playing more the style of footy we want to play.”

Adcock said that Hugh McCluggage and Jarrod Berry - both playing their first senior games at the venue – would benefit from the experience.

“It’s almost the most difficult place to play at the moment,” said Adcock.

“Port and Adelaide have made Adelaide Oval a little cauldron – especially with Port, the way they set their pre-game up (with ‘Never Tear Us Apart’) is really good. We prepped the players through the week for it, so they were ready and going to embrace it.

“Hopefully what we’ve seen is the younger players and the players as a whole have been able to take some real good learnings and see the positives from six weeks ago to now and see how we’ve improved.”
