Fresh from earning the Round 8 AFL Rising Star Nomination, defender Mitch Golby gave Lions fans a light-hearted insight into his life outside of football during a 30-minute live online chat on Thursday.

Specifically, Golby opened up about his household which he shares with team-mates Ryan Harwood and Callum Bartlett.

“I live with Ryan Harwood and Cal Bartlett. It’s a solid household, plenty of fun,” Golby revealed on lions.com.au.

“(My Mum) should be (pretty proud). I try to keep a tidy household. Ryan is the messiest, but Cal isn’t far behind.”

He also touched on his “battles” against Bartlett in FIFA, and mentioned that his good mate might be getting close to experiencing his first senior AFL match.

“He’s been playing well in the twos, so is hopefully not too far away,” Golby said of Bartlett. “We’ll have to see what happens I suppose.”

The 20 year-old from Kilcunda-Bass in country Victoria also spoke about the highs and lows of senior football - from having Carlton’s Eddie Betts taking Mark of the Year on him back in Round 2, to being nominated for the Rising Star award six weeks later.

Golby says the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of the modern game means that he can never feel too comfortable in his role at senior level.

“You can never be too comfortable (in the team), so I’ll just keep trying to play good footy,” he said.

“(The biggest challenge of playing senior football) is just the skill level of the blokes you’re playing on. You can’t afford to switch off for even a second on a lot of the AFL small forwards.”
