New recruit Rheanne Lugg and returning Lions forward Sophie Conway will add experience to Craig Starcevich’s team to play GWS in a friendly on Sunday.
Lugg played six games for the Adelaide Crows before joining the Lions in 2019’s Trade and Sign period. Conway is returning after a full season watching from the sidelines with an ACL injury.
A number of Hyundai Help for Kids Lions Academy draftees headline the team including Lily Postlethwaite and Belle Dawes. Irish recruit Orla O’Dwyer, who smashed the 2km time trial Club record, will play her first official football match.
Coach Craig Starcevich told lions.com.au the practice match provides on opportunity for him and his coaching staff to see their new players in a match environment for the first time.
The game also provides players an opportunity to prove their case as to why they should be selected for Round 1’s match against Adelaide.
“We’re wrapped to have Sophie Conway back in the squad, as well as Rhe Lugg playing her first game for the Lions,” Starcevich said.
“Both have a lot of experience to bring to the field, so we look forward to seeing them line up.
“This game is a good opportunity for us to play a lot of our new players and see if they’ll be ready for the AFLW standard.”
Lions fans can watch the game via a live stream on the Brisbane Lions Facebook page from 9am.
