QCLASH 5
The rivalry between Queensland’s two AFL sides enters its third year, with the Lions set to take on the Suns at Metricon Stadium for only the second time.

After the Suns drew first blood in QClash 1 at the Gabba, the Lions have claimed victory in each of their past three encounters to win back AFL bragging rights in Queensland.

The rivalry will continue tonight as the Lions head into enemy territory with the sole purpose of securing four Premiership points – and retaining the QClash Cup.

MARCUS ASHCROFT MEDAL
The player judged best by a panel of independent experts during the matches between the Brisbane Lions and the Gold Coast Suns will be awarded the Marcus Ashcroft Medal.

Ashcroft was a valuable member of the Lions’ side that achieved a hat-trick of premierships from 2001-2003 and was the first Queenslander to play 300 AFL games. He originally hailed from Southport on the Gold Coast before joining the then Brisbane Bears in 1989.

Jared Brennan (QClash 1), Simon Black (QClash 2), Tom Rockliff (QClash 3), and Gary Ablett (QClash 4) are the previous recipients of the Marcus Ashcroft Medal.

LAST TIME THEY MET
The Lions travelled to Metricon Stadium for the first time for Premiership points, carrying a 6-9 record into the Round 17 meeting.

In a scrappy affair, both teams had a slow start but it was the Lions who carried the lead at every break – 15 at the first, 11 at the main, and 12 at the third.

With just three minutes remaining, the Lions were trailing by a point before Vice Captain Tom Rockliff outmanned defender Jarrod Harbrow to mark in the goalsquare and kick truly, while Rohan Bewick sealed the deal a minute later with the final goal of the night to bring the Lions to an 11 point victory.

Rockliff and Simon Black had 29 disposals each, while Jack Redden was also influential with 24 touches and two goals.

The Lions currently have five players recruited from the Gold Coast including Daniel Merrett (Southport), Andrew Raines (Southport), Dayne Zorko (Broadbeach), Claye Beams (Labrador), and Stephen Wrigley (Labrador).

Gold Coast players Michael Rischitelli and Jared Brennan both joined the Suns at the end of 2010 following 7 and 8 seasons with the Lions respectively.

Former Lions premiership team-mates Marcus Ashcroft and Shaun Hart are now working with the Gold Coast SUNS in off-field roles.
