The Gold Coast SUNS’ Steven May has been referred directly to the AFL tribunal for a heavy hit on Lions ruckman Stefan Martin.
29-year-old Martin was flattened in the final minutes of the first half of Saturday’s match and stretchered off.
May was charged with engaging in rough conduct against Martin.
Martin passed his first concussion test on Monday but will undergo further testing during the week to assess his availability to play the Bulldogs.
The Match Review Panel said:
“In summary, May has been referred to the Tribunal directly for its consideration and is not eligible for an early plea.
“Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Brisbane Lions Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with severe impact to the head. The incident was referred directly to the Tribunal for its decision. The player has a bad record but no early plea is available.”
In other MRP news, Darcy Gardiner has been charged with striking the SUNS’ Aaron Hall during the third quarter of Saturday’s match.
The MRP said:
“In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.
“Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Gold Coast Suns Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact to the body. The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction.”
