Voss relieved by win
Lions coach Michael Voss says the club's first win for the season was a relief
The Lions had to wait until round nine to break their duck and while Voss wasn't doing cartwheels in his post match press conference, he said they had fought hard and earned the 14-point victory.
"It's one win isn't it but it's an important one for our club," he said.
"Hopefully it confirms a little bit of belief. As their coach it's been difficult to walk in on Monday and tell them to keep their chin up and keep fighting.
"As I said to them pre-season, I believe in this group really strongly. I thought we'd get some rewards earlier than this one but they didn't stop believing and to me that's what I'm really proud of.
"In context, (it's) one win, but for our club it's a very important one."
After being hammered in the clearances (25-9) in the first half, Voss said the Lions tinkered with their set up at stoppages to nullify the effect of Brent Harvey and Daniel Wells.
He said once the Lions stopped over-possessing the ball and getting it forward, the rewards were there, with captain Jonathan Brown leading the way with four goals.
"Once we were able to get some ascendency in the stoppages and get the ball going forward we were a different team," he said.
Voss said it was Brown's presence rather than his four goals that helped lift his teammates after eight weeks on the sidelines.
"I talk abut it a thousand times, even if he kicked no goals tonight he'll have an impact on the players around him because he organises and his presence makes other people walk taller and you know he's going to make a contribution at the same time," Voss said.
"I'm sure he'll come away knowing he's got a lot of work to do, but in context of the fact he's missed a lot of footy I think we can say it's a good outcome."
