One of the world’s biggest pop stars, Robbie Williams, showed his true colours in December 2006 when he donned a Brisbane Lions’ guernsey during his concert at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
The 52,000-strong audience erupted into cheers at the beginning of the show when Williams took his jacket off to reveal the maroon, blue and gold.
The charismatic singer of worldwide hits such as Rock DJ, Let Me Enetrtain You, and Angels had earlier spent time at the Gabba to get a crash course in Australian Rules football from some star-struck Lions players, including Jonathan Brown and Simon Black.
Before jetting out of Australia, the team presented Williams with an honorary Lions guernsey complete with his name and favourite number ‘8’ on the back as a reminder of his time in Brisbane.
Now, as he prepares for his first visit to the Sunshine State in eight years, Williams says he still cherishes his gift from the Lions.
“I like the Brisbane Lions top – it gives you that cut and makes your biceps look good,” Williams told Tod Robin, Terry and Bob of 97.3fm radio on Thursday morning.
“I love that top. It makes me look like some form of wrestler.”
No doubt Brown and Black – both known lovers of belting out a Williams tune at karaoke – will be eager to reunite with the megastar again when the Swing Both Ways tour hits Brisbane on Monday 22 September.
