Sons of guns
Imagine if all the sons of recent Lions greats played for the Club in the future
Voss quickly moves it on to Black who ignores the lead of Bradshaw and instead kicks the ball longer to the goal square where he finds….BROWN!
Sound familiar?
Well brace yourselves Lions fans, because there’s a chance you could re-live this exact same passage of play in 20 years’ time.
Following the recent ‘baby boom’ at the Gabba, lions.com.au has taken the liberty to speculate on some of the famous names that might feature in future Lions line-ups.
Obviously not every ‘son of a gun’ is going to pursue an AFL career. In fact, history would suggest that only a select few – if any – will one day follow in their fathers’ footsteps and become professional footballers.
But for the purpose of the exercise, and so that we might dare to dream, let’s cast our mind forward to the 2034 AFL season…
Brothers Lachlan and Lucas Black might only just be cutting their teeth in the AFL, but they help form a formidable centreline which is headlined by veteran Casey Voss – who is now in the twilight of his decorated career.
The team’s backline remains one of the stingiest in the AFL, with the Johnson trio – Lachlan, Preston and Aiden – having formed a near impenetrable defence for the past decade.
But the Lions are arguably most damaging up forward with Lynch (Tom), Bradshaw (Jake, Noah and Will) and the up-and-coming Brown (Jack) forming a familiar arsenal in attack.
Even if the tall timber isn’t able to mark the ball up forward, the exciting young Chase McGrath will almost certainly be there to mop up the crumbs.
Sprinkle in the likes Ashcroft, Adcock, Notting, Copeland, Pike and White – and you can begin to see how the Lions of 2034 are being compared to the greatest side of the modern era, which coincidentally featured their fathers.
