Brisbane Lions fans can expect some more changes at the selection table when the Match Committee convene today ahead of Saturday’s clash against Carlton at the Gabba.
It’s been almost two weeks since the Lions’ capitulation at the hands of North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium – and the selectors will be determined to find the right mix to face the Blues.
The past two winners of the Lions’ Club Champion award, Tom Rockliff (2011) and Joel Patfull (2012 and 2013), should return after being late withdrawals against the Roos due to illness, while second-year star Sam Mayes is also a certain starter after overcoming a minor concussion.
Rockliff, Patfull and Mayes are all integral members of the Lions’ best 22, and will be welcome additions to the side.
Depending on how the Match Committee view the potential match-ups with Carlton, the Lions’ ‘INS’ could include more than just the returning trio.
Matt Maguire is also available for selection having served a one-match suspension, and could be called upon to line-up against one of Carlton’s dangerous forwards – Jarrad Waite, Lachlan Henderson, or Levi Casboult.
Senior bodies Ryan Harwood, Brent Moloney, James Polknighorne and Rohan Bewick will also come under consideration – as will mature-age rookie Zac O’Brien, who has been winning plenty of the ball in the NEAFL.
Fortunately there are no new injuries to speak of, so those who miss selection this evening will line-up for the Reserves side in Saturday’s NEAFL clash against the Gold Coast.
