Matthew Leuenberger could return to the field before the Split Round, with the Brisbane Lions ruckman expected to re-join the main training group this week.

Leuenberger has missed the past eight matches since injuring his knee in Round 4, but is eyeing off a return around Round 16-17.

Physical Performance Manager, Brett Burton, says the 26-year-old is close to completing his rehabilitation.

“Leuey’s progressing well, he’ll join the main group for training this week with the aim to return either next week or the week after,” Burton told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.

Burton revealed that both Brent Staker and Patrick Wearden were also close to resuming their on-field duties.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Brown has escaped any structural damage to his face but will have to undergo concussion tests throughout the week.

“He’s going OK,” Burton said.

“We’ve got a concussion test that he’ll complete daily for the next few days to see how he’s going, and then we’ll make a decision mid-week to see whether he can train and play.

“It’s one of those tests you can’t cheat on.”
