It’s amazing what a few wins can do for a team’s confidence.

This time last month, the Lions had just three wins from 12 games and the Round 8 upset of Essendon was looking more and more like a ‘once-in-a-season’ type performance.

But three wins from their past four matches – including ‘that’ game against Geelong – has the Lions brimming with the sort of self-belief that was generated throughout the pre-season.

The Lions trailed by 32 points late in the third quarter against North Melbourne last Saturday night, but simply refused to roll over.

Instead, they took advantage of a battered Roos line-up and stormed home to claim yet another memorable victory in front of their home crowd.

What’s more, the win was orchestrated without regular midfield stars Simon Black and Brent Moloney.

Pearce Hanley, who booted three second half goals, was one of the catalysts behind the comeback against the Kangaroos.

"We know our track record of being pretty good in fourth quarters,” Hanley told The Courier Mail.

"We always knew we were in it and we were always confident we would fight back.

"We are making a habit of falling behind which isn't good but to comeback the way we did was great. It gives us a lot of momentum heading into next week."

Tom Rockliff echoed Hanley’s sentiments at the team’s recovery session on Sunday.

"We always felt like we could win. At halftime, we knew we weren’t getting our hands on the ball but if we could change that, we gave ourselves a chance," Rockliff said.

"In the third quarter we started to lift and we felt we had the run in the legs.

"The boys are really starting to click as a group and hopefully we can string together a few wins now.”

Although the Lions’ self-belief seems to have been restored, the Club is also aware of how quickly that confidence can be shattered as the approach this Saturday’s match against Melbourne in Darwin.

A humbling Round 1 loss to the Western Bulldogs, which effectively halted any momentum from the team’s successful NAB Cup campaign, will still be fresh in their minds.

"We have to put out our best performance of the year," Rockliff said of this week’s clash with the Demons.
