Sam Docherty, like many of his second year teammates, has undergone a significant physical transformation over the past year.
Upon arriving at the Club in November 2011, Docherty was prescribed an intense weights program designed to shape his boy-like physique into one that could withstand the physical demands of playing elite professional sport.
Fast forward 12 months and the results are clearly visible.
While Docherty’s talent has always been undeniable, the 19 year-old now looks like he belongs at the AFL level.
“It’s been tough, but it’s been good,” Docherty told LIONS TV.
“I came back in fairly good nick which means I’ve been able to get through all the training so far.”
“In the gym I’m trying to get my bench up. It’s getting there, but is still a fair way off from what I want to be.”
“Only being my second year there’s plenty of development left so I have to just keep going at it.”
“A fair few of the second year boys have really hit it hard this year and gotten fitter – big Justin Clarke’s been in the gym pushing big weights.”
Docherty is now eyeing off his first senior AFL match with the Lions – a milestone that eluded him during his injury interrupted debut season.
“Obviously it would be good to get a few games, but on a team note it’s important we have a good season for the group. That’s more important than just me getting a game,” Docherty said.
“It should be a good year for all the young fellas coming through and pushing for spots.”
