When Kelvin Cotter headed to the Gabba last Saturday night, little did he know that he was about to WIN a brand new Hyundai i20 on behalf of Carindale Rotary.

Cotter attended the game as a representative of long-time Lions corporate supporters Carindale Rotary, who were one of five lucky members selected earlier in the week to take part in a car giveaway courtesy of Platinum Partner and Round Nine match day sponsor, Hyundai.

And as it turned out, he randomly drew the key that ultimately opened the Hyundai i20 in the half time ceremony in the Lion Park outside the Hyundai Centre, Gate 2 at the Gabba.

Even though Cotter won the Hyundai for Carindale Rotary, and not himself, he was still understandably ecstatic with the result.

“It was fabulous. I knew I wasn’t going to keep it, but I’ve never won a meat raffle – it’s the first time I’ve ever won anything,” Cotter told lions.com.au.

“The Lions people did a great job of promoting it and pulling it all together with Hyundai.

“The only thing was that we were out the back of the stadium for most of the second quarter, so I missed all the Lions’ goals! But I’d obviously much rather win the car.

“It’s a terrific little car. I even went home and Googled it afterwards. My son was keen for me to give Rotary the money and keep it for myself.”

Cotter, a 13-year committee member and former President of Carindale Rotary, said the Hyundai i20 will instead be donated to a worthy cause.

“We held our weekly Rotary meeting this morning and came to the conclusion that we would donate the car to a local charity or community,” Cotter said.

“We’re asking committee members to come up with some options. We’ve also contacted our local members of parliament overnight and asked if they know of anyone – or any organisations – that might be suitable.

“I’m forming a committee that will table all suggestions, nominations and submissions, and decide on who we think is the most suitable recipient given the circumstances.”

It’s a terrific initiative by Carindale Rotary, who support a wide range of projects, that was made possible thanks to Lions Platinum Partner Hyundai.

Hyundai have also volunteered to service to vehicle at no cost for the next three years.

“We are proud Platinum Partners of the Brisbane Lions, and initiatives such as this helps further cement our relationship,” Hyundai Regional General Manager Terry Mulcahy said.

“It’s always great to reward those members and supporters who also financially support the Club.”
