While the Lions showed some promising signs during their 28-point win over Melbourne at the Gabba last Sunday, Vice-Captain Tom Rockliff has identified the team’s conversion rate from forward entries as an area for concern.

“We took some forward steps,” Rockliff told SEN’s The Run Home on Tuesday.

“We got the footy inside 50 enough. We got it in there 64 times, but I think we kicked a goal just 20% of the time, which is not a good ratio.”

“I think we’re operating at the lowest percentage in the competition. We’re just not taking our chances at this stage.”

Rockliff said there was no one reason behind the Lions’ significant drop in form since claiming the 2013 AFL NAB Cup pre-season title.

“I think we stepped away from what really worked for us throughout the pre-season. Teams identified (what we were doing) and started to shut it down pretty quick,” he said.

“It’s hard to put your finger on one particular thing that went wrong. There were a number of small things that went wrong and we just couldn’t fight our way out of it.”

He said the Club’s humiliating defeats against the Western Bulldogs (Round 1) and North Melbourne (Round 4) were particularly disappointing.

“We really let ourselves down in those two games down in Melbourne,” Rockliff said.

“It is disappointing to go down and put in performances like that, especially in front of our Melbourne supporters because they are so important for us.”

“With the history of the footy club, and Fitzroy, you really want to go down there and play some of your best footy to keep them involved and show them we’re going the right way.”

“In saying that, we do still have a young list and when the pressure comes, it can be quite hard for them.”

The Lions fielded one of their youngest sides in recent years against Melbourne in Round 5, featuring a total of 10 players with 25 games or less of AFL experience and six teenagers.
