Jonathan Brown says the Brisbane Lions are hoping to appoint his fellow Co-Captain prior to the Club’s opening round of NAB Cup matches on Saturday 23 February.

During a recent interview with SEN radio in Melbourne recently, Brown also revealed that he and Simon Black would play a key role in the selection process.

“Myself and Blacky are on the panel, and obviously Vossy, but everything has to be ratified by the Board,” Brown told SEN.

“Hopefully we can get it done in the next week or two. That means whoever the Captain may be gets a few weeks to settle into the role over the NAB Cup.”

Since the announcement was made last week, Jed Adcock, Tom Rockliff, Daniel Merrett and Daniel Rich have emerged as the leading candidates.

One player who certainly isn’t in the mix is Black, who looks more likely to drive the newly formed Mentors Group.

“It won’t be Blacky,” Brown said.

“He definitely doesn’t want the job. So you can rule the old fella out.”

Brown had initially wanted to relinquish the captaincy tag altogether, but was convinced by Senior Coach Michael Voss that a co-captaincy model would help ease the transition for his ultimate successor.

“I was prepared to step away from it fully, but Vossy wasn’t keen on the idea of me stepping down,” he said.

“I was happy with Vossy’s suggestions.”

“I think it depends on where groups are at – and our group is ready for it. It’s exciting for the future.”

“You want guys to have the confidence to step up, and this will help them grow a little more.”
