Most of the Brisbane Lions players rugged up for the team’s first official training run in Flagstaff on Thursday morning – but not Mitch Golby.
While most of his teammates decked themselves out in long sleeves, jumpers, and even beanies, Golby greeted the icy conditions in nothing more than he would have probably worn at Giffin Park in Coorparoo.
“The sun’s out and it’s a beautiful day,” Golby told LIONS TV at the end of the session.
“The boys are carrying on a bit much with the full SKINS and jumpers and that, but I’m a VIC Country boy who likes to get out in the cold.”
Although the colder conditions didn’t seem to faze the Gippsland junior, he certainly felt the effects of training at higher altitude.
“(The high altitude) isn’t too bad. The first run I felt it a little bit and the last run I was blowing a little bit,” he said.
“It’s more the recovery side of things. When you’re trying to suck in the breaths after running it’s a bit different, but we’ll see how we go when the sessions get a bit harder.”
Golby also said that reigning two-time Club Champion Joel Patfull was setting the standard early.
“Joel Patfull looked like he was moving well. He was full of chat while we were trying to rest and breathe. He looked like he was going well.”
