Jonathan Brown - 500 goals (currently on 498)

MARCUS ASHCROFT MEDAL

The player judged best by a panel of independent experts during the matches between the Brisbane Lions and the Gold Coast Suns will be awarded the Marcus Ashcroft Medal.

Ashcroft was a valuable member of the Lions’ side that achieved a hat-trick of premierships from 2001-2003 and was the first Queenslander to play 300 AFL games. He originally hailed from Southport on the Gold Coast before joining the then Brisbane Bears in 1989.

Suns utility Jared Brennan was the inaugural recipient of the reward in the first QClash in Round 7 2011, while Lions midfielder Simon Black won the medal at the teams’ second meeting in Round 21.

The Lions have won 1 of their 2 matches against Gold Coast, for a winning percentage of 50%.

LAST TIME THEY MET

The Lions were looking to exact revenge on their cross-town rivals following an 8-point loss in the first ever QClash earlier in the season.

The Lions started strongly in front of goal and took a 22-point lead into the first break against a flat Suns side.

The Lions went on to lead at every change, with outstanding work from the Lions’ young crop shining through, particularly Matthew Leuenberger (19 disposals, 42 hitouts, seven clearances) and Jack Redden (27 disposals, six tackles).

Simon Black, however, was head and shoulders above the rest with his 31 touches and nine clearances, and was the recipient of the Marcus Ashcroft Medal for best on ground.

The Lions finished the night with 12 goalkickers and a final winning margin of 62 points.

Brownlow Medal Votes: 3 - S. Black (BL), 2 - M. Leuenberger (BL), 1 - N. Bock (GCS)

Jonathan Brown will play in his first ever QClash this weekend, having sat out both meetings in 2011 due to injury.

Unlike 2011 where both games were held at the Gabba, this season will see the QClashes played at each team’s home stadium - the Gold Coast will host the Lions in Round 17 at Metricon Stadium.

The Lions also faced off against the Gold Coast in round 1 of the NAB Cup in February, where scrappy conditions in severe weather saw the Lions edge home by two points.

The Lions currently have six players recruited from the Gold Coast including Vice Captain Daniel Merrett (Southport), Andrew Raines (Southport), Dayne Zorko (Broadbeach), Claye Beams (Labrador), Bryce Retzlaff (Labrador) and Stephen Wrigley (Labrador).
Gold Coast players Michael Rischitelli and Jared Brennan both joined the Suns at the end of 2010 following 7 and 8 seasons with the Lions respectively.

Former Lions triple premiership team-mates Marcus Ashcroft and Shaun Hart are now working with the Gold Coast SUNS in off-field roles.
