THE BRISBANE Lions have turned their eyes towards the Demons' Stefan Martin as they search for a versatile key position player.

The Lions have made no secret of their desire to recruit an extra tall having made a bid for Chris Dawes, while their hopes of luring Kurt Tippett were dashed when the Adelaide key forward nominated the Sydney Swans as his preferred destination.

So far the Lions have been quiet on the trade front, only securing Brent Moloney via free agency in this Gillette AFL Trade Period.

At this stage the Lions have picks No.8, 23, 30 and 43 in this year's NAB AFL Draft, with the exact position of their picks to be finalised on Friday afternoon after the AFL awards free agency compensation picks.

Observers predict that Melbourne will receive a late second round pick for its net loss of players - Moloney and Jared Rivers (Geelong) - during the free agency period.

Martin could attract a pick as high as pick No.30, which would give the Demons impetus to continue activity before the end of the trade period.

Martin would appeal to the Lions as a player who can play forward and lend support to their ruck division.

Valuable defender Daniel Merrett was forced to play forward for much of 2012 and kicked 26 goals.

Martin is still contracted with the Demons for another season but played just seven games during 2012, his early season form hampered by injury.

The 25-year-old had a great season in 2011 when rucking solo for most of the year or playing as a second ruckman, roving forward. He is valuable at both ends of the ground and has the endurance to play as a tall, mobile midfielder.

However, the Demons have recruited Chris Dawes during the trade period and have been linked with North Melbourne's Cameron Pedersen and Essendon's Scott Gumbleton, but are yet to secure either through the trade period.

Melbourne list manager Tim Harrington revealed on AFL Trade Radio on Wednesday that rival clubs had inquired about Martin but would not elaborate.

The Brisbane Lions refused to comment when contacted by AFL.com.au.
