Former Lions defender Josh Drummond says he is keen to stay involved in football in an off-field capacity, after announcing his retirement as an AFL player last month.

Drummond told The Sunshine Coast Daily on Wednesday that he is already investigating that pathway through post-graduate studies in sports science and coaching.

"I'm keen to get involved in coaching and development. It's something I'm really keen on," Drummond said.

"I've been studying that for a few years and I'm hoping something will pop up in the region."

While Drummond’s sights are set on a full-time coaching role, he hasn’t discounted the possibility of returning to the Sunshine Coast to fill Maroochydore’s vacant senior coach position.

"I'm looking first and foremost to get a full-time coaching job, but if that falls through, then I will have a look at an option like that," he said.

The 29 year-old has already received a glowing endorsement from Lions Senior Coach Michael Voss, who believes Drummond has all the necessary tools to make a successful AFL coach.

“He’s got a footy brain - his ability to interpret and analyse a situation is excellent,” Voss said.

“I would have thought that if he’s got aspirations to coach or be involved somehow, he’s certainly got the nous to do so.”
