BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss says there’s an element of soul-searching at the club after the team slumped to its 11th defeat in 12 outings on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking after the Lions’ were thumped to the tune of 75 points by a rampant Hawthorn, Voss was candid in his summation.

“It’s no point looking at the stat sheet, that’s for sure,” he said in reference to the Hawks dominating across the park.

“They pretty much beat us up inside. Any time we got the chance for some transition we couldn’t get the ball flowing.

“The best way I could describe it was we got beaten up on the inside. You know, quick hands, freeing hands in the tackle. They certainly found their targets and when we were in the same situations we coughed it up and probably gave it back to them.

“The Hawks are playing some good footy and they’re up and about and look fresh and hungry and we look the direct opposite.”

Perhaps worse than the loss to Hawthorn is the prospect of another trip south next week, this time to face reigning premiers Geelong at its Skilled Stadium fortress.

“I would have thought since probably four or five weeks ago we’ve been pretty honest with each other and also our training and I hope this is a hiccup in the scheme of things, but we’ve got Geelong next week,” he said.

“We go down to Skilled and it’s probably the toughest road [trip] in footy and it’s a big challenge for us.”

Voss expects his side’s resilience to be the major characteristic tested in the coming weeks.

“Have we got the toughness to get out the other end? That’s what this comes down to now. It’s not about anything else. Can we have the resilience at the back end to be able to get through it?

“We could pack it up, that’s one choice, or we could look at it and say as a footy club we need to fight through this, and that requires a lot of effort to do and that’s what we’re committed to do.

“We provide an environment, that’s for sure, but eventually it’s got to come from within.

“We just haven’t got enough players who’ve been able to win their battles.

“The guys have been working pretty hard behind the scenes, working really hard. There’s a point in time when you want reward for effort, but we’re not getting the results.

“The forlorn look on their faces is probably more that they’re working pretty hard, but we’re not getting the reward.”
