In terms of functionality, Ryan Lester is probably best described as the Brisbane Lions’ own version of a Swiss Army Knife.

He is reliable, provides a variety of different uses, and is adaptable to almost any situation.

Such versatility made Lester a valuable tool for the Lions in 2012 - with the 20 year-old playing 19 of a possible 22 senior matches in just his second AFL season.

While the Oakleigh Chargers product is simply happy to be fulfilling a role for the team right now, he looks forward to eventually finding a position he can make his own.

“I’m definitely a utility,” Lester told lions.com.au.

“It’s probably helped me get a game a fair bit this year.”

“Going forward, the Club is hoping to settle me into one spot. For me, I’m hoping that’s either in the midfield or across half-forward.”

After injuries limited him to just three games during his debut season, Lester said his increased workload in 2012 had presented some new challenges.

“You definitely have your ups and downs throughout the year,” Lester said.

“My lean patch, if you like, was probably a couple of months ago. I found that I was putting too much pressure on myself to perform and ended up getting dropped back to the Reserves.”

“It happened to be a blessing in disguise. I started to enjoy my footy again, and I think my form reflected that in the end.”
