Players praise members
Some of the Lions players speak about the importance of the Club's membership base - both at home and away
The Lions players themselves have filmed a ‘thank you’ video of their own which will appear on the big screen prior to the match.
When lions.com.au caught up with young guns Mitch Golby, Ryan Lester and Rohan Bewick, they each spoke about the importance that the Club’s members and supporters have from a players’ perspective.
“The support is really important,” Golby said.
“It might sound stupid, but when the crowd is behind you, it almost seems as though the umpiring decisions go your way as well! It gives the team a huge lift.”
Even after only being at the Club for two seasons, Lester said that the members have played a critical role in helping restore that hostile environment for opposition teams that visit the Gabba.
“I think we’re really starting to get that home ground advantage back which we’ve probably lacked in the last couple of years,” Lester said.
“The members have certainly helped make us hard to beat at the Gabba. You just have to look at those two big wins against Adelaide and West Coast. Those were the two most memorable wins for the season - although I’d probably throw the Western Bulldogs game in Melbourne in there as well.”
While Bewick also praised the vocal Queensland members, he also stressed the importance of those who support the team interstate.
“The interstate members are just as important,” Bewick said.
“There might not be as many Lions members outside of Queensland, but you definitely notice their cheers when you’re away from home - particularly in Melbourne and Perth.”
