Two streaks at the opposite end of the spectrum go on the line in the opening round of the QAFL premiership season this weekend.

Reigning premiers Morningside take an 18-game winning streak into Round 1 against the last side to beat them, Mt Gravatt.

It is a week short of exactly 12 months ago that the Panthers last failed to sing their team song after a game when they were beaten by the Vultures at Dittmer Park.

While Morningside lost twice during the pre-season practice games, scratch matches are notoriously poor form guides and the Panthers will be out to make a statement from the start at Esplen Oval on Sunday.

The Panthers will unfurl their premiership flag before the game, which coincides with forward Shaun Mugavin’s 100th game for the club.

At the other end of the scale, the Western Magpies will be desperate to repeat their pre-season win over Labrador when they tackle the Tigers at Cooke-Murphy Oval on Sunday.

The Magpies lost all 18 qualifying rounds games last year and in fact have dropped their past 24 matches at State League level, having lost their last six matches of 2004 before dropping back into the Pineapple Hotel Cup.

This time around, the presence of former AFL players Tim Notting and Peter Everitt for Labrador will make the Magpies’ job much tougher.

The opening round will be played over three days, with the NT Thunder hosting the Brisbane Lions at TIO Stadium on Friday night.

With Jed Adcock ruled out of the senior side and brilliant utility Jared Brennan facing a possible suspension, the Reserves could lose two players and one will almost certainly be the in-form Tom Rockliff.

Aspley will be out to create their own small slice of history by winning their opening game of the season for the first time when they host Broadbeach at Graham Road on Saturday.

The Hornets lost their very first match at QAFL last season when they were overrun by Mt Gravatt in Round 1.

Southport host Redland in an early game at 11.15am at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday in an intriguing contest.

Redland have never beaten the Sharks.
