When Brisbane Lions defender Mitch Golby felt some discomfort in his foot after the team’s win against Melbourne in Round 14, he never imagined it would bring his breakthrough AFL season to a premature end.

Golby had proven a real find for the Lions in 2012, playing in each of the Club’s first 13 senior games and showing poise beyond his years across half back.

He averaged over 18 disposals per game and earned an AFL Rising Star nomination for his performance against GWS in Round 8.

So it was shattering news for the 20 year-old to hear that he had developed a stress reaction in his foot and would require a stint on the sidelines.

“I was pretty flat that I didn’t get to see the season out,” Golby told lions.com.au.

But Golby is no stranger to dealing with adversity, having already overcome a full knee reconstruction which he had undergone in his final year of junior football.

His latest setback is not nearly as severe, with the Kilcunda-Bass product revealing that he might have been available to play had the Lions qualified for Finals.

“If there was another two weeks left in the season, I’d probably be alright to play,” Golby said.

“I’ll definitely be right for the start of pre-season.”

“It was just a stress reaction - so fortunately we caught it at the stage before it became a fracture. It meant I had to wear a moon boot for about 4-6 weeks.”

“After a few weeks, I tried to get out of the boot and give the foot go. But it didn’t react too well and set the injury back to 8-10 weeks, which saw my season out.”
