There is no greater tribute at the Brisbane Lions than to be recognised as a Legend of the Club.
It is an honour reserved only for the absolute immortals, and a title that has been bestowed upon just three individuals – Kevin Murray, Haydn Bunton, and now Michael Voss.
Ask any Lions fan and they’ll tell you that Voss has long been considered a Club Legend, however it wasn’t made official until Wednesday night’s Hall of Fame ceremony in Brisbane.
His elevation to Legend status headlined the event, which also saw 10 new members inducted into the Lions’ Hall of Fame – George Holden, Len Wigraft, Bill Walker, Harold ‘Lal’ McLennan, Norm Brown, Roger Merrett, Chris Johnson, Shaun Hart, Chris Scott, and Darryl White.
Voss sits comfortably in the elite company of both Murray and Bunton, and at just 38 years of age, is clearly the youngest member of the legendary trio.
Bunton is one of only four people in AFL/VFL history to have won three Brownlow Medals, while Murray and Voss also took home ‘Charlie’ in 1969 and 1996 respectively.
Meanwhile, Murray shares the VFL/AFL record for most Club Champion awards with nine, while Voss (five) and Bunton (two) also claimed multiple Best & Fairest wins.
But Voss boasts arguably the most significant achievement that eluded both his fellow Legends – premiership success.
In fact, Murray experienced just two VFL Finals throughout his 333-game career, and Bunton never tasted September action – at least not during his time with Fitzroy in the VFL.
Voss remains the Club’s only three-time premiership Captain, with his 10-year helm as skipper also an all-time Club record.
His leadership credentials are unparalleled, and what made him the ‘Lion King’ of his era.
It was fitting on Wednesday night that Voss was officially welcomed as a Legend by none other than Kevin Murray – the only other living Lions Legend (Bunton passed away in 1955).
Time will tell who might one day join Voss, Murray and Bunton in this most exclusive group, but for now their contribution stands above all others.
